Race report
Once the flag is dropped Stef Van Zummeren, Michael Goolaerts, Julien Duval, Oliviero Troia, Mark McNally and Julien Morice jump clear, while André Looij and Edward Planckaert chase them down. The eight leaders race to a maximum lead of more than 11 minutes.

At the Muur van Geraardsbergen Tom Boonen attacks and he is accompanied by Gilbert, Trentin, Vanmarcke, Stuyven, Vanmarcke, Coquard, Kristoff, Rowe, Bodnar, Moscon, Démare, Vanspeybrouck, Modolo and Chavanel. They gobble up the front group with 67 kms remaining.

At Oude Kwaremont, with 55 kms left, Gilbert goes alone. After cresting the next climb, Paterberg, a group with Sagan, Degenkolb and Van Avermaet re-join the group Boonen. Then Felline and Van Baarle accelerate to try to chase Gilbert down.

While Boonen is hindered by a mechanical, Sagan attacks at Taaienberg and Van Avermaet, Naesen, Offredo and Trentin jump to his wheel. They re-join Van Baarle and Felline.

Gilbert is 58 seconds ahead of his chasers when Sagan and Naesen hit the cobbles on the last climb up the Paterberg. Van Baarle escapes the crash and is the first chaser, while Terpstra re-joins Van Avermaet to accompany the Dutchman.

The trio pushes on but to no avail. After Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy, the former World Champion takes the third Monument in his career.
