Tour of California 2018 Stage 6: Egan Bernal wins stage to take overall lead

Friday, 18 May 2018 - Featuring 4,880 vertical metres, the Tour of California's 6th stage is arguably the hardest race in this year's route. The first 100 kilometres are virtually all uphill and eventually the riders finish at the Heavenly summit in South Lake Tahoe. Egan Bernal climbs to a double victory - stage win and GC.

Race report
Attacks are flying after the start, but nothing sticks until nine riders take off at km 10. Toms Skujiņš, Lawson Craddock, Sean Bennett, Floris De Tier, Tom-Jelte Slagter, Gregory Rast, Evan Huffman, Benoit Cosnefroy and Serghei Tvetcov race to a maximum lead of more than 5 minutes.
The front group is reeled in at the Daggett Pass before Egan Bernal strikes with 16 kms remaining. Tejay van Garderen, Geoghegan Hart and Adam Yates are chasing. Daniel Martinez hooks on along with the likes of Rafal Majka and Lauren De Plus.
Bernal is in a class of his own and he wins the overall ahead of Tejay van Garderen. Tomorrow’s parade stage is for the fast men.
