It’s a first for the men in Northampton, but the Tour of Britain for women started and finished in Northampton before. In fact, it was the finishing venue of the 1st stage of the very first women’s edition. That day, Emma Johansson took the (sprint) win ahead of Marianne Vos and Hannah Barnes. Two years later the race returned to Northampton for the start of the final stage. The riders travelled to Kettering, where Lotta Henttala took the stage win and Lizzie Deignan sealed the overall victory.
The race gets underway from the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus. The riders then head west, pass through Daventry, and tackle two KOM climbs – Newnham Hill and Bullshill – before looping back to Daventry. They continue north via Watford, West Haddon, Naseby, Kelmarsh and Brixworth before approaching the finish line via Sywell and Ecton.
A sprint finish is the most likely outcome in Northampton. The route is gently undulating, with two modest climbs standing out in the first 20 kilometres of the race, as mentioned, Newnham Hill and Bullshill.
