Tuesday 21 January - The Tour Down Under kicks off with a 150.7-kilometre race featuring 2,386 metres of climbing. Three KOM climbs line the route, the last of which appears 30 kilometres before the finish line.

The first hill appears early on. It’s a 2.2-kilometre test with an average gradient of 5%, but it also includes a stretch at 13%. The riders tackle the second one, Berry Hill, halfway through the race. The 1.5-kilometre climb averages 6.9%.

Since Berry Hill is part of the finishing circuit, it’s also the last KOM of the day. The riders cross the summit with 29.5 kilometres left to race. The first half of this final section is undulating, the second part as good as flat.

The finish is situated on Albert Street in Gumeracha.

Last year’s opening stage of the Tour Down Under came down to a bunch sprint with Sam Welsford taking the flowers.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
