Tour Down Under 2016 Route stage 1: Prospect – Lyndoch
Tuesday January 19th, 2016 – Edition 18 of the Tour Down Under opens on a 130.8 kilometres course. Starting in Prospect, the riders head to a local circuit in and around Lyndoch. Expect the winner to be a sprinter as the race is on slightly rolling roads and the finale a false flat down.
What a place to start the 2016 World Tour season. Prospect is a suburb in Adeleide with houses selling at over $ 1 million. Edition 2014 saw stage 2 leave here for a spin to Stirling with Diego Ulissi taking the flowers.
Lyndoch hosts the Tour Down Under for the first time ever. It is located in the Barossa valley, famous for its wines.
With 12.8 kilometres done Lower Hermitage is reached. Located at over 400 metres it is the highest point of the day. The rider who passes here first will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow.
The race is on rolling roads. The first passage in Lyndoch is with 50 kilometres done and then three rounds of 26.9 kilometres close the stage. The final stretch of 3 kilometres is a false flat down, meaning speeds will be high before the most likely outcome takes place – a bunch sprint.
Last edition Jack Bobridge won the first stage, besting his fellow-escapees Lieuwe Westra, Luke Durbridge and Maxim Belkov with the chasing pack finishing in the same time.
The first three riders earn 10, 6 and 4 bonification seconds.
