Race report
The riders tackle the Gotthard Pass from the gun. An initial attack by Nans Peters and Pierre Rolland is neutralised before Julian Alaphilippe, Mattia Cattaneo, Marc Soler and Antonio Nibali give it a go. The four open up a 1 minute gap, but that’s all they get.

On the run-in to the Lukmanier Pass a huge group bridges across to the front of the race. Alaphilippe does the opposite, he stops his efforts and drops back into the peloton.

The new lead group widens the gap to more than 3 minutes before De La Cruz heads out alone with 40 kilometres remaining.

The Spaniard reaches the summit 1.10 minutes ahead of a chase group with Leknessund, Pernsteiner, Costa, Fabbro, Tolhoek, Hirschi, Vansevenant, Latour, Samitier, Kron, Powless, Wright and Serrano.

De la Cruz’ lead drops on the uphill drag to the line in Sedrun until he is caught by Costa and Pernsteiner with 7 kilometres remaining. The two push on together before Kron regains contact.

In the ensuing sprint Costa outguns Kron, but the former World Champion is relegated as he deviates from his line.

The peloton comes home almost 3 minutes later and Carapaz stays in the race lead.
