Race report
Attacks galore once the flag is dropped. Michal Kwiatkowski is among the most active riders and halfway the race, the World Champion is in the lead with Maciej Paterski, while the pack is 4 minutes down. The leaders are accompanied by thirteen riders who were in a large front group earlier. With 32 km’s left Paterski is in the lead with another companion – Diego Rosa.
The Italian is the last to be reeled in with 27 km’s to go. Sky sets the pace and decimates the pack to 25 riders. Leader De Clercq is still on board en he clings on for dear life at the steep Sciana Bukovina.
Mikel Nieve attacks with 10 km’s left and Ben Hermans joins him after a 3 km’s chase. When the are reeled in on a climb with 3 km’s left Nieve’s team-mate Sergio Henao takes over and the Colombian powers to the win, despite a brave chase by Ulissi who comes in second, a spot he now also occupies in the GC, albeit in the same time as leader Henao.
