In 2023, the Tour de France peloton also featured 176 riders, 26 of whom did not reach the finish in Paris.

Two GC contenders were the first riders to abandon the race. Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz crashed in the same corner of a descent in the first stage. The Olympic champion remounted and reached the finish with a knee injury, which forced him to pull out the following morning. Mas did not continue due to a fractured scapula, making him the first rider to abandon the 2023 Tour de France.

Mark Cavendish hit the deck in stage 8 and pulled out with a shoulder injury.
