Race report
Visma | Lease a Bike is up to something. Matteo Jorgenson, Christophe Laporte, and Wilco Kelderman are part of a an early breakaway of 22 riders. Richard Carapaz and Simon Yates make the junction on the Col de Vars, while a lot of riders are dropped.

At the summit of the Vars, the lead group includes Matteo Jorgenson, Wilco Kelderman, Nicolas Prodhomme, Ilan Van Wilder, Jai Hindley, Richard Carapaz, Cristián Rodríguez, Simon Yates, and Oscar Onley. Carapaz takes most KOM points at the summit.

Onley, Prodhomme, and Van Wilder are dropped on the Cime de la Bonette. Carapaz is the first rider to reach the summit, taking the lead in the mountains classification from Tadej Pogacar.

In the valley leading up to the finishing climb, the attackers reach a maximum lead of 4.30 minutes.

UAE Emirates speeds up and the gap has fallen to 3.30 minutes with 14 kilometres left to climb. This inspires Jorgenson to attack from the lead group. He opens up a 30 seconds lead and then Carapaz starts to chase. Moments later, Tadej Pogacar drops the remaining riders in the GC group.

Carapaz initially closes in on Jorgenson but then falters. Yates catches up with him. Meanwhile, Pogacar is approaching at a rapid pace.

Yates drops Carapaz in the final 7 kilometres, but it’s to no avail as the yellow jersey keeps surges on. He overhauls all the attackers before he catches Jorgensen within the last 2 kilometres and solos to his fourth stage victory of this Tour de France.
