Race report
Attacks are flying from the start, but it takes tens of kilometres for the break to form. Arnaud De Lie, Cedric Beullens, Bryan Coquard, and Mathieu van der Poel attack in the streets of Lourdes.
The peloton keeps chasing until Oier Lazkano, Kévin Vauquelin, Raúl García Pierna, and Magnus Cort bridge across. A second group featuring Ben Healy, Michal Kwiatkowski, David Gaudu, Louis Meintjes, and Alexey Lutsenko regain contact on the Tourmalet.
Oier Lazkano is the first rider to crest the Tourmalet. The chasing group is down to Michał Kwiatkowski, Bruno Armirail, David Gaudu, Mathieu van der Poel, Ben Healy, Sean Quinn, Louis Meintjes, Alexey Lutsenko, and Magnus Cort. The peloton is almost 4 minutes adrift.
The lead group is down to Kwiatkowski, Gaudu, Healy, Lazkano, and Meintjes on the Hourquette d’Ancizan. Gaudu outsprints Lazkano at the summit to take most KOM points.
The GC group tackles the finishing climb 1.20 minutes behind the five leaders.
Healy speeds up on the early slopes and Gaudu follows him like a shadow. Another acceleration by the Irismen, and he is alone in the lead.
Adam Yates attacks from the GC group with 8 kilometres left. Roughly 3 kilometers later, Tadej Pogacar surges away and rides up to his teammate. In the background, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel join forces.
The energy burst ends Healy’s effort.
Pogacar continues alone, while Vingegaard drops Evenepoel and overhauls Yates. Second by second the yellow jersey distances his rival.
Pogacar flies in the final 2 kilometres, while Vingegaard struggles. The Slovenian wins the race with a 39 seconds margin, thus extending his lead over the defending champion to almost 2 minutes.
