Race report
Attacks are flying from the start, and eventually the breakaway gets clear at kilometre 12. Ion Izagirre, Valentin Madouas, Matej Mohoric, Frank van den Broek, Clément Champoussin, Sandy Dujardin, and Mattéo Vercher are the initial attacker, while Ryan Gibbons and Johan Abrahamse bridge across on the Colle de Valico Tre Faggi. Vercher loses contact on the climb.
The breakaway riders to a maximum lead of 6 minutes on the climb before Izagirre wins the KOM sprint at the top. Abrahamsen takes most points at the Côte des Forche.
Dujardin wins the intermediate sprint before he is dropped on the Côte de Carnaio. Champoussin loses contact also. At the summit, Izagirre wins the KOM sprint ahead of Abrahamsen. The same scenario unfolds on the Barbotto climb.
On the Côte de Barbatto, the lead of the breakaway drops to under 3 minutes as Tadej Pogačar’s team ramps up the pace in the peloton. Izagirre loses contact from the leading group, while David Gaudu is dropped from the peloton. Mathieu van der Poel can’t follow the pace either, while Abrahamsen pockets most points at the summit.
The lead group is down to Abrahamsen, Madouas, and Van den Broek on the Côte de San Leo as Romain Bardet attacks from the peloton. Van den Broek waits for his teammate, and the two rejoin the leaders. Moments later, Abrahamsen is dropped from the front. Meanwhile, Ben Healy has also set off in pursuit.
The Bardet/Van den Broek combo gets rid off Madouas on the climb to Montemaggio before they crest the Côte de San Marino with a 1.30 minutes lead over Healy. The peloton reaches the summit 15 seconds after the Irishman.
The teammates lead into the flat final phase with a 1.20 minutes advantage over the peloton, which consists of fifty riders. The gap is down to 20 seconds inside the last 3 kilometres.
Bardet and Van den Broek hold off the charging pack to celebrate in Rimini. The Frenchman wins the stage and the yellow jersey, while the Dutchman is the first leader in both the young riders and the points competition.
