Taco van der Hoorn attacks after 15 kilometres with Benoît Cosnefroy and Toms Skujins in his wheel. The peloton keeps chasing with several favourites on the attack. A regroupment takes place after 50 kilometres of racing at breackneck speeds.
Magnus Cort intiates the next breakaway with Stan De Wulf. Vegard Stake Laengen, Christophe Laporte, Kasper Asgreen, Simon Geschke, Andreas Leknessund, Georg Zimmermann, Conor Swift and Mads Pedersen track the two down. This attempt is history at kilometre 65.
Up next: Wout van Aert, Jakob Fuglsang and Quinn Simmons. The powertrio open a gap of 4 minutes before the peloton brings it back to 2 minutes. Fuglsang falls back into the main group in the last 70 kilometres.
Simmons can’t follow the pace with 30 kilometres remaining. Van Aert pushes on alone and he is caught 11 kilometres before the finish. A few kilometres later Vlasov hits the deck and he is forced to chase.
Vuillermoz strikes on the Côte de Pulventeux and he is caught on the early slopes of the finish climb.
Roglic opens the sprint early and actually launches Pogacar. The titel defender opens a gap of a few metres and powers to his first stage win and yellow jersey in the 2022 Tour de France.
