Race report
A lot of movement from the start before Matteo Jorgenson initiates a huge breakaway after 35 kilometres. The American enters the Aubisque with his fellow-attackers 20 seconds ahead of the peloton.
The lead group is down to Van Aert, Martínez and Pinot on the Col de Spandelles. Then Pogacar attacks on the lower slopes and Vingegaard follows him like a shadow. Kuss comes clawing back and that scenario repeats itself four times.
Thomas makes it back, and strikes. But he sees a white and yellow jersey come storming past when Pogacar ignites the afterburners again. The two reach the summit 1.30 minutes behind the leaders.
Pogacar goes down on descent and Vingegaard waits for him. Back in the valley a group with Kuss, Benoot, Thomas, Houle, Madouas and Meintjes rejoin the duo.
Van Aert, Martínez and Pinot enter the climb to Hautacam 2.30 ahead of the yellow jersey group.
The gap is down to 1 minute when Van Aert speeds up. Pinot loses contact, while the chasers – Kuss, Vingegaard, Pogacar – track the remaining two leaders down in the last 5 kilometres. Martínez and Kuss sit up. The American emptied his tank, while the Colombian waits for his leader Thomas.
Van Aert sets the pace until Pogacar loses contact. He powers on for a while until he stops his efforts with 3 kilometres remaining, leaving a yellow carpet ride for Vingegaard to the stage win.
