Race report
Guillaume Boivin and Owain Doull jump off the front after 44 kilometres of racing at breakneck speeds. The duo enters the Aspin 30 seconds ahead of the main group.
Pinot and Lutsenko take over the reins on the climb. Van Baarle, Mühlberger, Leknessund, Geschke, Simmons, Ciccone, Hamilton, Teuns, Zimmermann, Van Baarle, Périchon, Martínez, Konrad, Verona, Juul-Jensen and Uran go after the two.
Pinot and Lutsenko crest the Aspin in first position, ahead of Geschke and Ciccone.
Bardet and Jungels cross over to the chasers in the run-up to the the Hourquette d’Ancizan. Yates and Pidcock lose contact in the GC group on the climb.
The chasers catch Pinot and Lutsenko early on the Col de Val-Louron-Azet. Leknessund heads out alone.
Meanwhile, the GC group is down to McNulty, Pogacar, Vingegaard, Kuss and Thomas. Just before they catch the only remaining chaser, Uran, Kuss loses contact. Thomas can’t follow the pace either, while the remaing trio gobbles up Leknessund in the last 3 kilometres of the Val-Louron-Azet.
Pogacar attacks just before the summit and Vingegaard follows him like a shadow. McNulty regains contact on descent.
The three tackle the finish climb 1.20 minutes ahead of the first chasers. Bardet attacks with Thomas in his wheel. The Briton drops the Frenchman later on, while the status quo reigns at the front.
It comes down to a steep uphill sprint. Pogacar outguns the maillot jaune, while Vingegaard stays in the GC lead, 2.18 minutes ahead of the title defender. Thomas still sits in third, almost 5 minutes behind the race leader.
