A bunch sprint at the base of the Pyrenees. It happened last year also with Mark Cavendish storming to victory. It was his fourth win in that edition and his 34th in total. That day, the ManX Missile equalled Eddy Merckx’ record of most Tour de France stage wins. And also: it was the first ever Tour de France bunch sprint in Carcassonne.
The route to Carcassonne was slightly flatter than this time, but a second bunch sprint is a very likely scenario. The sprinters are not given a lot of opportunities to showcase their skills this Tour de France, so a miscalculation by their teams would be very unfortunate. To say the least.
The penultimate Carcassonne finish happened in 2018. Magnus Cort outsprinted his breakaway companions Ion Izagirre and Bauke Mollema at the end of a day with a lot of vertical metres.
Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen are the most successful sprinters on this Tour. The two Dutchmen won the 2nd stage and 3rd stage, respectively. Wout van Aert finished in second on both occassions.
