Race report
Ide Schelling attacks early on with Maxime Chevalier, Cyril Barthe, Michael Schär and Jelle Wallays. The five put 3 minutes into the peloton.
Geraint Thomas crashes after 40 kilometres. The Welshman is able to continue, but he takes down Robert Gesink who is forced to pull out.
Schelling takes back the polka dot jersey from Van der Poel on the Côte de Cadoual before he drops back into the peloton.
Roglic hits the deck with 10 kilometres remaining and he is forced to chase. Moments later the last attackers are reeled in.
Another crash happens on the descent to Pontivy before yellow jersey Van der Poel leads-out his sprint leader Merlier. While Philipsen takes over on the home straight Ewan goes down and takes Sagan with him.
Merlier is unaware of all the chaos behind him and powers to his first Tour de France stage win. His team mate Philipsen crosses the line in second and Bouhanni finishes in third. Van der Poel comes home in seventh position to stay in the yellow jersey.
Most GC riders – except Carapaz and Alaphilippe – lose time.
