Race report
Following intitial moves by De Gendt, Kruijswijk, Mohoric and Alaphillippe, Sbaragli jumps clear at kilometre 28. He opens up a gap of 30 seconds before Turgis, Chevalier, Rickaert and Skujins go after him. The four make the catch at kilometre 38.
The peloton keeps chasing and the attackers are almost brought back after the Col du Bal before the gap widens again. But after the intermediate sprint the breakaway is history.
Poels strikes at the foot of the Col de Montségur. Cattaneo goes with him, while Woods bridges across. The Canadian goes alone before Poels rejoins him in the last kilometres to outsprint him at the top. Cattaneo is trailing at 20 seconds with Mollema, Meintjes, Martin (Guillaume), Fraile, Chaves, Higuita and Konrad 20 seconds further behind.
With 80 kilometres remaining Cattaneo regains contact with the two leaders.
Woods outsprints Poels for KOM points at the top of the Col de la Croix des Morts before the chasers rejoin them with 72 kilometres to go. Rolland, Pacher, Madouas and Gesbert complete a chase of tens of kilometres at the base of the Côte de Galinagues.
Poels outguns Woods at the summit, while the Canadian moves into the lead of the KOM classification.
Mollema goes solo with 42 kilometres left to race and he puts 1.30 minutes into his former companions.
The gap goes down on the Col de Saint-Louis. Catteneo, Higuita, Woods and Konrad are the first chasers at the top, 1 minute behind Mollema. But the Dutchman extends his lead in the last 17 kilometers to take his second Tour de France stage win in his career.
Konrad outsprints Higuita for the second place, while Martin finishes in eleventh position to move to second place in the GC. The frenchman is 4 minutes down on yellow jersey Pogacar.
