Race report
Franck Bonnamour initiates the breakaway after 15 kilometres before Danny van Poppel, Cristian Rodríguez, Anthony Perez, Ide Schelling and Conor Swift rejoin the Breton. The six carve out a gap of 4 minutes before the peloton takes the reins.
Ide Schelling attacks 2 kilometres before the Côte de Stang Ar Garront with still 85 kilometres out. His former companions are reeled in by the peloton.
A big crash occurs with approximately 40 kilometres to go as Tony Martin hit a spectator carrying a sign board. Half of the peloton is on the ground. Jasha Sütterlin can’t continue.
Schelling is reeled in with 28 kilometres, while a second crash happens inside the last 7 kilometres. A group of some 40 riders continues toward Landerneau.
Alaphilippe strikes with 2 kilometres to go and he opens up a good gap. Is it too early? No, the world Champion forges on and wins the first yellow jersey.
The GC group finishes 8 seconds later. Michael Matthews outsprints Primoz Roglic, while Richard Carapaz misses the decisive move and loses 5 seconds.
‘Superman’ López, Steven Kruijswijk, Richie Porte, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Michael Woods and Ion Izagirre suffer even bigger losses, ranging from 2 minutes to 12 minutes.
