Race report
Following an intense opening the peloton is still bunched on the Col de la Hourcère. Barguil and Pinot are on the move before Hirschi opens up a proper gap. The young Swiss rider reaches the summit 1 minute ahead of Kämna, Reichenbach, Formolo, Fraile, Martínez, Gaudu, Castroviejo and Barguil with the GC group another 30 seconds further behind.
Hirschi widens his lead on the Col de Soudet – both in the ascent and the descent – to a maximum of 4.30 minutes.
Just before the Col d’Ichère the peloton reels in the chasing group.
While Buchmann loses contact in the GC group on the Col de Marie Blanque, while Hirschi’s lead falls below 2 minutes. Pogacar accelerates behind him and Roglic closes the gap with Bernal, Landa and Porte on his wheel. Yates loses contact.
Hirschi reaches the summit 20 seconds ahead of Roglic and Pogacar. The Slovenes enter the descent with Bernal and Landa. Yates is 1 minute in arrears.
The four chasers reel in Hirschi with 2 kilometres to go and the race boils down to a sprint. Hirschi opens strong, but Pogacar and Rogic overhaul him to best him with a tiny margin.
Stage win for Pogacar and Roglic moves into the GC lead.
