Race report
The riders attack straight away on the uphill after the start. A strong group with Hirschi, Schachmann, Peters, Pinot, Carapaz, Amador, De Marchi, Van Baarle, Alaphilippe, Soler and Kämna open up a gap before it all comes together.
Carapaz and Roche push on together. Barguil, Bettiol, Trentin, Oss, Amador, Kämna, Verona, Erviti, Juul-Jensen, Verona, Reichenbach, Pacher and Alaphilippe bridge across.
Benoot, Pedersen (Casper) and Rolland track the leaders down on the Col de Porte. The lead group crests the pass 1 minute ahead of Sivakov, Powless, Geschke, Nieve and Sicard.
The five make it across on the Côte de Revel, while Rolland is on the move with the aim of taking the polka dot jersey. The Frenchman solos over the top before he waits for his breakaway companions.
Before the Montée de la Saint-Nizier-du-Moucherotte Pacher heads out alone. He enters the climb with a lead of 30 seconds and the peloton is trailing at more than 13 minutes. Carapaz, Reichenbach, Alaphilippe and Kämna bring back Pacher halfway up the mountain.
Carapaz ups the pace in the last 2 kilometres before the summit. Alaphilippe, Reichenbach and Pacher drop back before Kämna head out alone just before the summit.
The German puts 1.30 minutes into Carapaz on the flat section before the short climb to the line in Villard-de-Lans. Reichenbach finishes third, while Sivakov crosses the line in fourth place.
UAE-Emirates ups the pace in the peloton on the uphill kicker into Villard-de-Lans before Van Aert takes over. Pogacar tries to break clear inside the last kilometre, but without success as Roglic jumps to his wheel.
Superman López opens up a small gap, yet the GC remains unchanged. So Roglic retains the maillot jaune.
