Race report
Without Vincenzo Nibali, who was forced to leave the Tour de France with a fractured vertebra after yesterday’s crash, the peloton leaves Bourg d’Oisans. Sepp Vanmarcke is first to strike, but Thomas De Gendt and Tom Scully are first to open up a gap. Michael Schär and Dimitri Claeys track them down before the lead keeps hovering around 2 minutes for most of the race.
With 23 kms to go Schär is the last man standing. His solo ends with 6 kms remaining.
Philippe Gilbert kicks when the flamme rouge flies over his head, but he is brought back. In the ensuing bunch sprint Peter Sagan powers to his third win in this Tour de France. Alexander Kristoff comes close before he is pipped with an ultimate jump. Arnaud Demáre rounds out the podium.
The top of the GC remains unchanged, so Geraint Thomas is still the man in yellow.
