Race report
Once the flag is dropped Taylor Phinney, Thomas Boudat, Yoann Offredo and Laurent Pichon go on the attack. Phinney is the first to crest the Grafenberg, thus taking 1 KOM point. The quartet races to a maximum lead of more than 3 minutes before the pack takes them on a leash.
With 30 kms remaining a crash in the peloton takes Froome and Bardet down. But they are able to go on en they re-join the peloton.
Phinney takes another KOM point atop Côte d’Olne and will start in the polka dot jersey. Along with Offredo he pushes on, but they are chased down in the last kilometre.
In the ensuing sprint Marcel Kittel outpowers Démare and Greipel, while leader Thomas finishes safely in the peloton.
