Tour de France 2016 Stage 2: Stage win and yellow jersey Sagan; Pinot, Contador and Porte lose time

At 183 kilometres, stage 2 in the 2016 Tour de France leads from Saint-Lô to conclude with a summit finish in Cherbourg to Octeville. Jasper Stuyven almost brings the early break home, yet Peter Sagan shows his strength by powering to victory. Race results
Once the flag is dropped KOM-leader Paul Voss jumps clear along with Jasper Stuyven, Vegard Breen and Cesare Benedetti. They race to a lead at over 5 minutes in no time.

At Côte de Thorigny-les-Villes Breen snatches the only KOM-point, while Stuyven outsmarts Voss both at Côte de Montabot and Montpichon.

With 75 kms remaining Contador hits the deck. The peloton waits for him and the gap widens to almost 7 minutes.

At Côte d’Octeville, with 8 kms left, Jasper Stuyven jumps clear. The pack is almost 2 minutes down, while Porte is plagued by a mechanical with 5 kms left and he is forced to chase.

When hitting the closing climb Stuyven enjoys a 1’20” lead over the pack. He takes the KOM-points with 1 kms left, but then he is brought back with 500 metres left. Sagan outsprints Alaphilippe and Valverde. Froome and Quintana put time into Pinot and Contador at the closing climb.
