Race report
Once the flag is dropped Clement, Barta, Quemeneur en Fonseca are on the attack. They race to a maximum advantage of 3 minutes.
Tinkoff-Saxo puts the wind to good advantage to tear up the pack with 100 km’s left. The gain for the leaders goes down fast. Barta takes all points at the intermediate sprint, while his compatriots are reeled in at first, but then Clement and Fonseca are off again. They rejoin Barta at the front. But not for long as strong winds once again inspire Tinkoff-Saxo and Etixx to start pushing
The pack breaks again and with 60 km’s left the sunny start is complete history. Quintana, Mollema and Valverde are dropped and Nibali and Pinot are forced to chase also. Both groups hook up.
In the front group are Contador, Uran, Cavendish, Greipel, Martin (Tony), Sagan, Froome, Van Garderen, Dumoulin and Van Avermaet. Quintana, Nibali et al are 1 minute down and they can’t bridge the gap.
At Neeltje Jans Mark Cavendish opens the sprint… too fast, as he is brought back by André Greipel. The German outperforms Peter Sagan by centimetres while Fabian Cancellara takes third place, which brings him the yellow jersey. Contador and Uran are dropped in the finale and arrive 0’04” after Chris Froome, who enters the top-10.
The group with Nibali, Quintana and Pinot is 1’28” down on the front group.
