Race report
Once the flag is dropped the pace is so high nobody manages to break clear until 7 km’s. Then Pierrick Fédrigo jumps off the front of the pack and the old warrior races to a 11 minutes advantage. He is accompanied by Kenneth Vanbilsen who was chasing him for over 30 km’s.
The duo increases the gap to almost 15 minutes, but at the lower slopes of the closing climb it is down to 2 minutes.
Movistar sets the pace and Pinot, Bardet and Talansky are dropped at the lower slopes. With 11.5 km’s left Robert Gesink attacks, while Vincenzo Nibali and Rigoberto Uran are dropped. With 7 km’s Gesink is brought back and Contador is dropped when Froome takes control. Quintana manages to stay in his slipstream for 1 km, but with 6 km’s left the Briton is off.
