Two years ago stage 2 also travelled from Camaiore to Follinica. At the end of a flat race Marcel Kittel powered to victory. Little did we know it would be his penultimate stage win. Four days later the German took another victory and that was it.
The route of this year’s 2nd stage is more lumpy, especially in the first part. The riders tackle a small climb once the flag is dropped and with 62 kilometres remaining the Tirreno-Adriatico moves through Castellina Marittima, a village on a hill. To get there the road rises for 8 kilometres at shallow gradients. Approximately 40 kilometres later the route starts to climb again, this time to picturesque Canneto, but this uphill is even less demanding
The race concludes with a local round of 22.4 kilometres with a small kick-up inside the last 13 kilometres.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint at kilometre 136 (in Canneto) comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
