Slideshow 1/4
Saturday 24 July - The men’s road race at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo amounts to 234 kilometres, while the elevation gain is 4,865 metres. The riders tackle the lower slopes of Mount Fuji on a route with five ascents before the race finishes at the Fuji International Speedway racetrack.
The riders set off in the Musashinonomori Park of Chofu, a western suburb of Tokyo, to head in southwesterly direction. The route starts to slope slightly after approximately 40 kilometres, while the scenery gradually changes from urban and flat to rural and mountainous.
Doushi Road is the first classified climb of the Olympic road race. The 5.9 kilometres ascent slopes at 5.7% before it is crested after 80 kilometres. The route continues along the stunning Lake Yamanaka to reach the next summit almost 20 kilometres later. The Kagosaka Pass is a short climb – 2.2 kilometres at 4.6% – with its peak at an elevation of 1,111 metres.
The route drops down to enter the ‘Mount Fuji Circuit’, which lies in the shadow of Japan’s highest mountain. Mount Fuji peaks at an altitude of 3,776 metres and the lower slopes are a mid-way marker for the men’s race. The circuit amounts to 50.9 kilometres with the Fuji Sanroku standing out. Peaking at 1,451 metres, the 14.3 kilometres climb at 6% is crested after 140 kilometres in the saddle.
Following a 15 kilometres descent and 40 kilometres of undulating terrain, the race passes through the Fuji Speedway racetrack before hitting its final loop. The route climbs up the monstrous Mikuni Pass – 6.5 kilometres at 10.6%. En route to the top the riders stumble upon a 4 kilometres section with an average gradient of 12%. A short descent and 6 kilometres along Lake Yamanaka before the riders tackle the Kagosaka Pass again, the 2.2 kilometres climb that also served as the second ascent.
A long descent runs onto the undulating finale on the Fuji International Speedway.

A tough course.
Hard to see a sprinter getting through to win it.
But surely a four-man team stands a better chance than smaller ones?
