Race report
Corné van Kessel and Simon Pellaud are the first attackers and they are accompanied by Benjamin Declercq, Nicola Bagioli, Quentin Pacher and Iuri Filosi. The six open up a gap of more than 2 minutes, but it never widens.
When the peloton almost makes the catch, Pellaud heads out on his own. He opens a 4 minutes gap.
Jungels, Burghardt and Craddock join Pellaud with 75 kilometres remaining, but a little later they are brought back. And while former winner Benoot abandons the race a group of twenty riders opens a gap.
Simon Clarke goes solo on the asphalt before the longest gravel road of the day. Ion Izagirre, Michael Gogl, Jack Bauer and Marcus Burghardt join him on the dust sector. A group with pre-race favourites also rejoin the lead.
And while Van der Poel and Alaphilippe lose contact, Fuglsang goes alone. A group with Bettiol, Van Aert, Van Avermaet, Formolo and Schachmann rejoin the Dane just before hitting the tarmac again.
Schachmann accelerates with 20 kilometres remaining. Van Aert goes with him and the two enter the penultimate sector with a 6 seconds lead before the others, except Van Aermaet, make it across.
Van Aert goes alone on the El Tolfe-climb. Formolo and Schachmann are the first chasers.
While entering the old city of Siena, Van Aert enjoys a lead of 27 seconds, which is enough to secure his first win in the Strade Bianche. Formolo bests Schachmann in the sprint for second place.
