Race report
Tim Wellens is raring to go. The start flag has barely dropped, and he’s already on the attack. Obviously, the number two on GC is not given any leeway. In the run-up to the Puerto Castillo de Locubín, Ben Turner and Florian Dauphin are also reeled back in by the peloton.
On the climb, Igor Arrieta attacks, while Jordan Labrosse, Ruben Guerreiro, and Anders Halland Johannessen set off in pursuit. They do not make it into the break of the day, but Ådne Holter, Nicolas Prodhomme, Enric Mas, Welay Hagos Berhe, Axel Laurance, and Gianluca Brambilla do. And, of course, initiator Arrieta.
But is it really a break of the day? The situation remains chaotic behind and GC leader Van Gils is forced onto the defensive. Pavel Sivakov, Clément Berthet, Johannes Staune-Mittet, Brandon Smith Rivera, and Steff Cras bridge across to Mas and Arrieta at the front.
On the final ascent of the Alto de los Villares, only Sivakov, Rivera, and Berthet remain in the lead. Van Gils is trailing by half a minute in a group with Tom Pidcock and Enric Mas. Those two bridge across to the front on the descent.
Van Gils has missed the move, and his deficit increases from half a minute to over a minute. His only company is Staune-Mittet. When the gap reaches one and a half minutes, more riders join the chasers from behind.
he chase never really takes off, so it’s clear that the five riders at the front will produce the stage winner. Once they reach the climb, they take their time, allowing the Van Gils group to close in during the final phase — but not enough to bridge the gap.
The five climb together, but in the last 50 metres, Pidcock accelerates to take the stage win. Sivakov crosses the line in third and takes the leader’s jersey from Van Gils.
