Saturday 17 February - The 4th stage of the Ruta del Sol amounts to 98 kilometres and features an elevation gain of almost 2,000 metres. Four hilly laps around Lucena precede two climbs in a row - the first 2.8 kilometres at 6.5%, the second 1.4 kilometres at 9.4%. (Slideshow route/profile)

[Stage is cancelled]

Lucena lies halfway between Córdoba and Granada in the heart of Andalucía, surrounded by rolling hills dotted with olive groves. The original 4th stage was supposed to start in Córdoba to conclude with four laps around Lucena. The four laps are all that remain – although ridden in the opposite direction -, and it’s complemented with an extra climb to the line.

The circuit features the Alto de la Primera Cruz, which is 2.8 kilometres climb with an average gradient of 6.5%, but also a sector at 10% halfway up. In the original route the riders would fly down to Lucena with 4 kilometres remaining, but now they tackle the Alto de la Primera Cruz for a fifth time. And to pep things up a little further, a righthander at the top ushers in the punchy ramp to the Santuario de Araceli – 1.4 kilometres at 9.4%.

[Underneath the maps of the original 4th stage – the circuit remains, although it’s ridden in the opposite direction and supplemented with the Santuario de Araceli ramp.]
