Ruta del Sol 2021 Route stage 5: Vera – Pulpí

Ruta del Sol 2021 stage 5Saturday 22 May - The last stage of the Ruta del Sol travels from Vera to Pulpí. Although the places are only 25 kilometres apart, the route adds up to 107 kilometres.

Vera and Pulpí are located midway between Murcía and Almería in the southeastern part of Spain. The region is not known for its long climbs, yet the terrain is never even either. So climbing legs will come in handy in the last stage of the Ruta del Sol.

One climb stands out. The Alto de la Geoda is 6.9 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 3.9%. The riders tackel the ascent twice since it is part of the finishing circuit. The last time over the Alto de la Geoda is with 5.5 kilometres out.

The finish is not in Pulpí itself, but in the Sierra del Aguilón to the east of the village. Which is where the Giant Geode of Pulpi was discovered in 1999. The egg-shaped rock formation measures 8 metres long and almost 2 metres high and wide, making it the largest geode in Europe.

Last year’s Ruta del Sol finished with a time trial from Mijas to Mijas. Dylan Teuns won the race on countback ahead of overall race victor Jakob Fuglsang.
