Ruta del Sol 2020 Route stage 1: Alhaurín de la Torre - Grazalema

Ruta del Sol 2020 stage 1Wednesday 19 February - The Ruta del Sol comes barging in with 3,740 vertical metres on the 1st stage. At 173.8 kilometres, the route includes five intermediate climbs, while the Puerto de las Palomas marks the finale. This 12.7 kilometres ascent is crested with 6 kilometres remaining.

In last year’s Vuelta a Andalucia, which is another name for Ruta del Sol, Matteo Trentin sprinted to victory in the place where the caravan now kicks into gear, Alhaurín de la Torre. Fast finishers should be warned. No party for them in Grazalema. Suffering awaits them as the route of this year’s 1st stage includes five climbs.

The riders traverse the Sierra de las Nieves and move through Ronda to continue to Olvera. The finale is played out in the Sierra de Grazalema. The final haul up on the Puerto de las Palomas begins in Zahara de la Sierra. The ascent is 12.7 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 6.5%. The riders fly down a 6 kilometres descent into Grazalema before the finish line runs false flat uphill.
