Race report
A stormy opening phase leads to a breakaway with Benoit Cosnefroy, Julien Bernard, Harold Tejada, Georg Zimmermann, Matthieu Ladagnous, Lilian Calmejane, Joan Bou and Julien Trarieux. The eight open up a maximum gap of 4 minutes.
Bou and Trarieux can’t follow the pace on the Balès, while Cosnefroy and Ladagnous drop back on the Peyresourde. On the early slopes of the finish climb Calmejane, Bernard, Tejada and Zimmermann are also brought back.
More and more riders lose contact while climbing the Beyrède – for instance, Froome and ‘Superman’ López – until only Bernal, Pinot, Vlasov and Sivakov are left in the final 2 kilometres. The Frenchman is the first one to crack before 24-year old Vlasov has to admit defeat in the face of the two Ineos-youngsters.
Bernal solos to triumph and now leads the GC 14 seconds ahead of Sivakov with Vlasov 9 seconds further behind.
