Race report
It takes just under 25 kilometres before Abram Stockman, Kim Heiduk, Oier Lazkano, Markus Hoelgaard, Jonas Rutsch, Max Walker, Jasper De Buyst and Rory Townsend manage to open up a gap, which they widen to 3 minutes.
Just before the first cobbles, Jasper Stuyven and Jasper Philipsen hit the deck. Once at the cobbles, Filippo Ganna is forced to chase too after a mechanical issue. They make it back with 129 kilometres to go, helped by the fact that the peloton eases off a bit.
As they enter the Forest of Wallers, the breakaway’s lead has dropped to just half a minute. As they exit, they see the favourites come flying past. A front group of about 30 riders forms. Wout van Aert and Stefan Küng miss the move and now have to chase from behind.
Mathieu van der Poel keeps on pushing until only Mads Pedersen, Stefan Bissegger, Jasper Philipsen, and Tadej Pogacar are left in his wheel. Gradually, the leading five edge clear of the first group of chasers – Wout van Aert, Stefan Küng, Florian Vermeersch, Mike Teunissen, Joshua Tarling, Matthew Brennan, Tim van Dijke, Markus Hoelgaard, Jonas Rutsch, and Abram Stockman.
Pogačar launches an attack on the cobbles from Tilloy to Sars-et-Rosières. While Pedersen punctures, Van der Poel powers across to close the gap. Philipsen bridges back once they hit the tarmac. Pedersen finds himself in the chasing group, as does Bissegger.
By the time they hit Mons-en-Pévèle, the three have a 90-second lead — but then Philipsen cracks, leaving just Pogacar and Van der Poel up the road.
At sector 9, with 38 kilometres remaining, Pogacar misses a corner. Van der Poel charges on and exits the cobbles 20 seconds clear of the world champion.
Pogacar gets the gap down to 15 seconds, but then it goes back up again. With the gap down to thirty seconds, he changes bikes — and just like that, it stretches to 50.
Van der Poel leaves Carrefour de l’Arbre with a 1-minute lead and forges on to win the Hell of the North for the third year running. Pogacar comes home second, while Pedersen wins the sprint for third ahead of Van Aert and Vermeersch.
