Race report
It’s full-on action in the first part of the race. Eventually a lead group with Molenaar, Antunes, Arcas, Azparren (Enekoitz), Azparren (Xabier), Bais, Berwick, Díaz, Figueiredo, Pietrobon, Svestad-Bårdseng and Uriarte opens up a 2 minutes lead.
Xabier Azparren heads out alone in the run-up to the first time up the San Pedro de Líncora. Molenaar tracks him down in the climb, but obviously, the attack is not to last and they are caught.
Vingegaard strikes early in the second climb up the San Pedro de Líncora. Bernal, Cepeda and – surprise, surprise – Molenaar follow his move. The Dutchman loses contact, while the other two to cling on for dear life.
Vigegaard shakes off Bernal 1 kilometre under the summit and solos to victory. Also, the double Tour de France winner moves into the leader’s jersey.
