How the race unfolded
Calmejane, Debeaumarché, Jousseaume, Koretzky and Riabushenko form the breakaway. The five put 4 minutes into the peloton.
In the first Ventoux ascent Debeaumarché is distanced. Meanwhile, the peloton ups the pace and the gap falls to 1.35 minutes at the summit.
The gap is down to 1 minute with 18 kilometres to, which inspires Riabushenko to attack. Jousseaume goes with him, but the Russian heads out alone in the woods.
It’s to no avail, as the favourites overhaul him inside the last 12 kilometres. Following several attacks, Guerreiro gives it a go. As the first chasers are his team mate Chaves and Storer, a victory at the Bald Mountain beckons.
And so it happens. Chaves completes the EF Education-EasyPost party by finishing in second.
