Race report
In an uneventful opening, Anne Knijnenburg opens the first gap, and after she is reeled in, it’s Nikola Nosková who gives it a go. That attack is also short-lived.
It’s gruppo compatto halfway through the race, when Anne Knijnenburg attacks again. Virginia Bortoli and Laura Tomasi set off in pursuit, without bridging the gap.
Knijnenburg puts 2.30 minutes into the peloton, before she is caught at the summit of the Capo Mele.
The riders tackle the Poggio climb with a small peloton. One kilometre from the summit, Juliette Labous accelerates. Kasia Niewiadoma takes over, followed by Kimberley Le Court Pienaar, but no one manages to break away.
A group of fifteen riders plunges into the descent, and as it levels out, Elisa Longo Borghini launches an attack. There’s a moment of hesitation, but then Lotte Kopecky initiates the chase in support of her teammate Lorena Wiebes. In the final 300 metres, Kopecky has almost bridged the gap when Marianne Vos opens the sprint. Wiebes reacts to power past her. Victory for Wiebes, second place for Vos, with Noemi Rüegg finishing third.
