Race report
A group of eight men jumps clear early on. Samuele Rivi, Filippo Conca, Yevgeniy Gidich, Artyom Zakharov, Alessandro Tonelli, Filippo Tagliani, Ricardo Zurita and Diego Pablo Sevilla Lopez reaches the summit of the Turchino 7 minutes ahead of the peloton.
After the Capo Berta the gap falls below 4 minutes, the lead group is halved and Tom Pidcock can’t follow the pace in the peloton. Peter Sagan is forced to chase after a mechanical inside the last 30 kilometres.
Gidich, Sevilla, Rivi and Tonelli tackle the Cipressa 2 minutes before the peloton. While the latter two are the last men standing, Fabio Jakobsen can’t follow the pace in the pack.
The main group is down to some 30 riders after the Cipressa. They catch the last two attackers before the Poggio.
Pogacar accelerates several times on the Poggio, but he can’t open a gap. Then Kragh Andersen goes with the Slovene in his wheel. Van der Poel and Van Aert close the gap before Mohoric brings the others back in the first phase of the descent.
Mohoric opens a gap with a brilliant descent. Turgis tries to bridge across in the streets of San Remo, but it’s in vain. The Frenchman finishes in second before Van der Poel sprints to third place.
