Race report
Sylvain Moniquet jumps off the front at kilometre 5 and Harm Vanhoucke, Bruno Armirail, Jacob Madsen and Alexis Vuillermoz join him. The breakaway extends to eleven riders when Pau Miquel, Baptiste Planckaert, Paul Ourselin, Marco Tizza, Kenny Molly and Luc Wirtgen bridge across after 50 kilometres. They carve out a lead of more than 6 minutes.
The Stockeu brings the lead group down to Armirail, Doubey, Ourselin, Moniquet, Vanhoucke and Wirtgen, while a huge crash in the peloton inside the last 60 kilometres takes down Julian Alaphilippe, Ruben Guerreiro, Rigoberto Uran, Romain Bardet and Wilco Kelderman. The World Champion abandons.
Armirail edges away from the lead group on the Côte de la Redoute, while Evenepoel powers away from the peloton when the climb flattens out at the top. He gobbles up Armirail with 22 kilometres to go.
Evenepoel enters the Côte de la Roche aux Faucons 37 seconds ahead of the peloton and he keeps his lead on the climb.
The chase group comes closer on the rolling section after the Roche aux Faucons, but it’s to no avail. Remco Evenepoel continues in ITT style and wins Liège-Bastogne-Liège, while Quinten Hermans outsprints Wout van Aert to take second place.
