Race report
Faber and Zanardi carve out a lead of 3 minutes before regrouping takes place after the Côte de Wanne. Fisher Black strikes and reaches the Côte de la Haute-Levée with a small lead, while Wiles, Kennedy, Koster, Chabbey, Thomas and Chapman bridge across.
The seven are brought back before Fisher Black heads out alone, again. She is caught just before the Redoute. Moolman strikes on the early slopes of the iconic climb. The other favourites bridge across just before the top.
Uttrup Ludwig, Moolman and Brand push on with three to open up a gap of 30 seconds. Meanwhile, more riders rejoin the chase group.
Almost 2 kilometres before the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons the chasers reach the attackers.
Van der Breggen sets the pace on the steep climb until there are five riders left: Vollering, Van der Breggen, Van Vleuten, Niewiadoma and Longo Borghini. Moolman, Vos and Uttrup Ludwig regain contact.
On the 6% slope inside the last 12 kilometres Van Vleuten speeds up with Van der Breggen in her wheel. Longo Borghini rejoins them, while Vollering and Niewiadoma also bridge across.
Van der Breggen sets the pace to prevent Vos – who is a good sprinter – from coming back. The World Champion does the lead out in Liège as well, after which her team mate Vollering powers to the biggest victory in her career. Annemiek van Vleuten and Elisa Longo Borghini round out the podium.
