Race report
A lot of movement once the flag is dropped and once the dust (mud) settles a break away of eight is clear. Lilian Calmejane, Julien Bernard, Jérémy Maison, Andrea Pasqualon, Tobias Ludvigsson, Kevin Deltombe, Mathijs Paasschens and Kenny Molly carve out a gap of more than 10 minutes before the peloton takes the reins. In Bastogne the lead has fallen to 6.30 minutes.
Alejandro Valverde abandons with approximately 100 kilometres remaining.
Bernard heads out alone on the Côte de Mont-le-Soie. He is reeled in with 70 kilometres remaining before Kangert and Fraile head out together on the Col du Rosier. Lambrecht, De la Cruz, De Marchi, Verona, Caruso, Cosnefroy, Albasini and Anacona bridge across just after the summit.
Kangert is the first rider over La Redoute. He pushes on alone to hit the Côte de Forges with a 20 seconds lead, while Patrick Konrad bridges across. Wellens goes after them with Impey on his wheel to track them down before the Côte de la Roche aux Faucons.
Wellens accelerates on the climb, still, Woods overhauls him with all pre-race favorites in his slipstream. The Canadian pushes on with Fuglsang and Formolo. Teuns and Gaudu go after them, while Fuglsang drops Woods and Formolo on the false flat after the top.
He reaches Liège half a minute ahead of Formolo.
