Race report
In rainy conditions, the race sets off without the record holder. Seven-time winner Anna van der Breggen was due to make her comeback, but had to withdraw at the last minute due to illness.
Despite several attacks, the peloton remains together until kilometre 25. Then Marieke Meert and Célia Le Mouel give it a go, and they are joined by Julie Van de Velde and Monica Greenwood. The four are reeled in before the second climb of the day, Côte de Petite Somme
Around halfway through the race, Anne Knijnenburg attacks. She rides solo for a while before Cédrine Kerbaol bridges across. The French rider continues alone on the Côte de Cherave. She opens a 1-minute lead, but her effort comes one lap later to an end, on the Côte de Cherave.
Juliette Labous leads Demi Vollering up the Mur de Huy, with Puck Pieterse, Elisa Longo Borghini and Kasia Niewiadoma tucked in behind. Liane Lippert isn’t far off either.
As soon as Vollering takes over from her teammate, Pieterse stays right on her wheel. When the road flattens out on the final straight, she kicks hard and powers past to take the win. A stunning debut in La Flèche Wallonne for the 22-year-old.
