Race report
The breakaway takes shape after the Côte de Courrière. Sara Martin, Julie Van de Velde and Elena Hartmann carve out a lead of over 4 minutes. Meanwhile, Grace Brown and Pauliena Rooijakkers open the chase, but without coming close to the attackers.
Hartmann loses contact in the first ascent of the Wall of Huy. She is overhauled by Brown and Rooijakkers before they are themselves caught by the peloton just before the Côte d’Ereffe.
Rooijakkers doesn’t give in and she goes again to rejoin the two attackers with 10 kilometres remaining. Elisa Longo Borghini attacks in the background with Elise Chabbey, while Lotte Kopecky tracks them down.
The quartet pushes on with Rooijackers, but it all comes together inside the last 6 kilometres. Then Riejanne Markus gives it a go. She moves through Huy with a 15 seconds lead but is caught early on the early slopes of the local Wall.
Her compatriot Demi Vollering takes over and sets the pace for most of the climb. One after the other, the riders lose contact, but two manage to cling on – Kasia Niewiadoma and Elisa Longo Borghini. More so, Niewiadoma jumps clear on the last brutal ramps and holds off Vollering on the home straight to take a well-deserved win. After strong performances in Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders, Niewiadoma finally celebrates. Vollering has to settle for second place, Longo Borghini finishes in third.
