La Flèche Wallonne 2025: The Route

La Flèche Wallonne 2025

Slideshow 1/14
Wednesday 23 April – La Flèche Wallonne is one of the most predictable races on the cycling calendar. This year’s route covers 205.1 kilometres and takes in eleven climbs, but the action will almost certainly come down to the second half of the final drag up the Mur de Huy.

The riders clip into their pedals in Ciney and tackle the Côte de Ver and Côte de Petite Somme on their way towards the circuit around Huy. The local loop is 37.2 kilometres long and features three climbs – the Côte d’Ereffe, the Côte de Cherave and the Mur de Huy. All three are packed into the second half of the lap, and since the riders hit the circuit for the first time roughly halfway through the race, they get an early taste of the decisive climbs.

Last year, the Cherave was left out of the route, but it didn’t really change how the race unfolded. After the usual early skirmishes, it all came down to the final ascent of the Mur de Huy. Even Tadej Pogačar didn’t dare mess with the tried-and-tested formula in 2023, choosing not to launch anything early. And despite the bitterly cold conditions of last year, which made the race extra tough, the peloton still tackled the final haul up the Mur in single file. Just before the bend where the gradient eases slightly, Stephen Williams jumped clear. The Welshman held on for the win, with Kévin Vauquelin and Maxim Van Gils finishing second and third.

The Mur de Huy is a 1.3-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 9.6%. It opens relatively gently, but really kicks in after 400 metres. The gradient doesn’t drop below 10% for the next 800 metres, before easing to 6% on the home straight.
