Race report
After 43 kilometres of action two riders manage to distance the field. Caroline Andersson and Antri Christoforou are accompanied by Rachel Neylan and Ella Harris in the following lap. The four open up a 1.30 minutes gap.
The attack is neutralised in the first ascent of the Côte de Cherave, while Niewiadoma, Moolman and Van Vleuten strike on the Wall of Huy. Longo Borghini rejoins them before Vollering brings the peloton back on the plateau.
Moments later it is Spratt who gives it a try. She opens up a gap of more than 1 minute, but she is caught on the Côte de Cherave.
Vollering ups the pace with Lippert, Chabbey, Niewiadoma, García, Moolman, Longo Borghini, Van Vleuten, Persico, Ewers and Realini in her wheel. A group dropped riders regain contact just before Huy.
Vollering enters the Wall of Huy in first position. Niewiadoma follows her move, but is distanced. Lippert regains contact later, but it’s also to no avail. Vollering keeps on pushing and Lippert fades away.
Impressive show of strength by the Dutch powerhouse. Who’ll be able to match her in Sunday’s Liège–Bastogne–Liège?
