Race report
Ainara Elbusto and Silvia Zinardi attack early on to open up a gap of more than 4 minutes.
When the gap has been halved, Alison Jackson, Mariia Novolodskaia and Aude Biannic track the leaders down. While Elbusto can’t follow the pace, the other four push on.
Novolodskaia goes solo with 32 kilometres remaining and she crosses the line for the last lap 1.20 minutes ahead of the peloton.
The Russian rider is caught on the last climb before maglia rosa Annemiek van Vleuten attacks with Anna van der Breggen, Amy Pieters, Marianne Vos, Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, Liane Lippert and Elisa Longo Borghini. Several riders restore contact in the descent.
A huge crash inside the last kilometre disrupts the sprint. Maglia rosa Van Vleuten is among the riders who hit the deck before Lotte Kopecky wins the sprint a few bike lengths ahead of Lizzie Deignan.
Van Vleuten crosses the line with a broken wrist and she abandons the Giro Rosa.
