Giro Rosa 2019 Route stage 1: Cassano Spinola - Castellania (TTT)
Friday 5 July - The Giro Rosa opens with a team time trial of 18 kilometres between Cassano Spinola and Castellania. The riders get a first taste of the mountainous days ahead, as the route is far from flat.
Given the demanding course, time gaps are expected to be opened up on this first day of action. World Champion Canyon-SRAM (Kasia Niewiadoma) is likely to be challenged by Sunweb (Lucinda Brand), Boels-Dolmans (Anna van der Breggen) and Mitchelton-Scott (Annemiek van Vleuten).
Following a short section on the flat the route goes uphill for 5 kilometres at approximately 5%. The downhill is just as long before 2 even kilometres run to the next uphill. This one is around 4 kilometres and slightly irregular. With sections at 6 to 7% the climb is never very steep, but it will be hard to find a rhythm. Obviously, it is important to remain grouped, as the time of the fourth riders counts. All teams on the Giro Rosa features six riders.
To pay hommage to Fausto Coppi the finish is situated in Castellania, where Il Campionissimo was born hundred years ago.
