Race report
A group of twelve riders distance the peloton early on. Liane Lippert, Christine Majerus, Elena Cecchini, Clara Koppenburg, Eugénie Duval, Sarah Roy, Barbara Guarischi, Sylvia Persico, Chiara Consonni, Dani Rowe, Enilia Fahlin and Maria Giulia Confalonieri extend the lead to 1.30 minutes.
While approaching the only classified ascent of the day the gap goes down fast and the break is caught. On the climb itself the peloton goes down to 35 riders. Kasia Niewiadoma is first to crest ahead of QOM Elisa Longo Borghini and Amanda Spratt.
Then it’s time for an attack by Alice Maria Arzuffi, Ruth Winder and Tayler Wiles. They put 1.30 minutes into the peloton, which is a big enough margin. Winder outguns her companions in a three-up sprint to take the maglia rosa. The American is the fourth Sunweb rider in pink in this edition of the Giro Rosa.
