Giro Rosa 2016 Route prologue: Gaiarine – Gaiarine
Friday, July 1, 2016 - The 2016 Giro Rosa opens with a 2 kilometres prologue in Gaiarine, 70 kilometres to the northeast of Venice. The highest point lies at 17 metres above sea level and the lowest point is at 15 metres. In short, a course can't be any flatter.
The first rider rolls of the starting ramp at 19:00 before all other contenders leave at intervals of 45 seconds.
In 2015, the Giro Rosa opened in Ljubljana with another prologue at exactly 2 kilometres. Annemiek van Vleuten took the win in 2’48”, 1 second ahead of Lucinda Brand and Roxanne Knetemann.
Is Van Vleuten up for a triple-win? Two years ago she powered to the win in the prologue also. The course was 50 metres longer – 2,05 kilometres – and her winning time was 2’26”.
In last two editions Gaiarine has been departure place for Giro Rosa-stages to San Fior. In 2014 Emma Pooley took the flowers, while last year it was Megan Guarnier who powered to the win.
