Race report
Sylvain Moniquet jumps clear from the start with Diego Rosa, Jaakko Hänninen, Natnael Tesfatsion and Matthew Holmes. The peloton is still close behind when Rosa goes solo on the second climb. The Italian is the first rider at the summit before Joe Dombrowski and Natnael Tesfatsion rejoins him on descent. Jonathan Caicedo, Felix Gall, Nans Peters, Eduardo Sepúlveda, Filippo Zana and James Knox round out the lead group just before entering the third climb of the day.
Rosa adds 18 extra points to his KOM tally at the third summit. The peloton is trailing at more than 5 minutes when tthe riders move through mountain village Roccaraso.
The lead group is down to Tesfatsion and Rosa on the Passo Lanciano. Rosa is the first rider at the top and he moves into the KOM lead. Dombrowski, Peters and Sepúlveda are 50 seconds in arrears.
Tesfatsion distances Rosa on descent, but he misses a corner. Rosa is alone in the lead until Dombrowski and Peters regain contact with 20 kilometres to go. The American pushes on alone, but he is reeled in by the peloton before the finish climb.
Pre-race favourites Ciccone and Yates drop back early on the Blockhaus. INEOS sets the pace and maglia rosa López is among the riders who lose contact.
Carapaz speeds up inside the last 5 kilometres. Bardet and Landa follow him like a shadow. Almeida tracks the three down with Pozzovivo and Hindley in his wheel.
An acceleration by Bardet and the former trio is back in the lead. But, again, Almeida comes clawing back with the other two.
Hindley opens the sprint early and he holds off Bardet and Carapaz, while López crosses the line 1.46 minutes later. The Spaniard stays in the overall race lead, 12 seconds ahead of Almeida with Bardet 2 seconds further behind.
